Create Your Own Gluten Free Granola From Scratch
Take the struggle out of finding nutritious, made from scratch, alternatives to store-bought cereal, with this wonderful homemade gluten free granola recipe! I love a bowl of cereal in the mornings, but I hate that I’m starving again within an hour. I developed this granola recipe to help start our mornings out on the right foot with something that will keep us full until lunch.
Gluten Free and Dairy Free Alterations
This granola can easily be made both gluten free and dairy free with a few alterations. Certified gluten free rolled oats can be used if needing gluten free and substituting coconut oil instead of butter is a great dairy free alternative. A note on oats: they are naturally gluten free themselves but are routinely processed in facilities that process products with gluten. Therefore, if you are needing a certified gluten free granola, make sure you use oats from a dedicated gluten free facility.
Baking for a family with food allergies definitely has its challenges which is why I love how simple this recipe is. You are able to create great tasting, healthy, allergy free food, from scratch, using ingredients and add-ins that your family loves. My favorite recipes are ones that lend themselves well to lots of substitutions and this is one of those recipes. Enjoy customizing it to fit your family’s needs!
Getting Started
Start by melting one stick of butter, ¾ c. honey, 1/3 c. molasses in a 9×13 cake pan on the stovetop. Stir while melting so it doesn’t scorch or start browning the butter. Remove from heat as soon as the butter is completely melted.
Stir in 1/3c. ground flaxseed, 3/4c. dried cranberries. If adding nuts, add in this step. Stir well to completely coat the cranberries and nuts.
Next, add the oats in 2c. increments, stirring well between each addition. The last few additions will seem like there won’t be enough liquid to coat everything but just keep stirring.
After incorporating all the oats, put the pan into a preheated 350 oven for 30 min, stirring every 10min. Once done, leave out to cool completely, stirring occasionally, before putting in a container. Do not put in a container if still warm, otherwise it’ll harden into a brick!
